I've updated the Theremin Music page with several additional albums.  Please let me know if you have a favorite that isn't listed yet!

World Thereminization!

There are currently four Beat Frequency albums available for purchase.

The first (The Chordless Chord) is only available on iTunes.

The other three (Psilocyren, Invisible Horn, Zero Beat) are available on iTunes, Amazon and other good digital outlets.

There is also an album by a duo called Beat Frequency which is not theremin music. It has a photo of a bald man and a buxom blonde woman on the cover. They are not me, I am the original Beat Frequency.

Also, Chris Conway has at least three theremin albums: Adagios Electric, Contact Light and Theremin & Hurdy Gurdy.

When I started playing the theremin back in 1996, there was one available CD on the market, that was Clara Rockmore's DELOS recording, THE ART OF THE THEREMIN.

Today, in 2014, there are dozens of theremin recordings, including THREE posthumous releases from Clara Rockmore, and a re-issue of some of Samel Hoffman's most popular 78's from the late 1940's.

I know that supporters of "world thereminization" will find all this to be a wonderful development but I wonder how many recordings a tiny "niche" market like "theremin" can reasonably support.

This kind of reminds me of the early days of synthesis..

One had albums like "Switched on Bach" and numerous synth albums "Everything you wanted to hear on the synthesizer but were afraid to ask" ranging in quality from really good to utterly awful - there were albums from Tomita (Pictures at an exhibition) and then others which stopped brandishing the word "Synthesiser" on the title - and the synthesiser then slowly (well - not that slowly) just became an instrument one expected to hear..

IMO, albums which dont specifically state "theremin" in the title (the majority now I think) might indicate that the instrument is getting past the "early stage" seen with synthesis - "Switched on bach" sported an album cover filled with a Moog Modular - it was a revolutionary album in that it showed the instrument was not limited to the experimental niche ..

Do we really want to keep a "niche" market like "theremin"?  Surely we want the theremin to be a bigger part of all sorts of music - used as an instrument for the realization of music, rather than being the primary novelty focus.

@Amey : I love your album! - No mention of the theremin on the cover, but the moment it starts, there is no doubt that this music could not exist without the theremin and without you playing it!

@ Fred: I know there is no mention of the theremin on the cover and we wanted it that way. We wanted the young fern (with a "secret World" as its core) to be truly the representation of the essence of this project. But inside the album there is a photo of me and Doug near his piano and the theremin :) 

I have to say, I truly opened the emotional flood gates on this album. When you hear the theremin on this album, it is the most form of profound Honesty that I have ever been subject to; what you hear is truly a representation of the person that I am... It is at the same time scary ~ yet a very humbling experience, and I am so glad I did it :)

I am so so proud and excited to share this project with the ones who are willing to listen and get a glimpse of what we are creating here...

The reality is that 2014 is a totally different music world than 10 years ago in the recording scene. The distinction between major record label vs. private label vs. someone just making an album in their garage is getting hard to tell just by looking on the internet. iTunes and its ilk are the great equalizers.

Internet distribution has increased the number of people that can get access by who knows what? I don't have to buy an album anymore. I can preview each track and only buy what I want for $1 a piece (and often do this).

Inexpensive digitial recording now allows musicians to create their own albums very cost effectively and distrubution on the internet is also extremely cost effective.

People are now creating music and distrubuting it almost at will be cause they easily can. Many people are putting music out there because I assume "they have the need to" divorced from sales.

Then there is the issue of so much music available for free on iTunes and nealy for free on internet subscription services. It dilutes everyone's profits anyway. The music business is imploding, trying to figure out how to reinvent itself in this new world.

Can the theremin market support this? I think it's kind of irrelevant these days. Put your music out there. If it's good, it will be noticed. I think that's the bottom line today.
