I'd like to take my Theremini to the East Coast this summer. I'm hoping I won't have problems/delays at security if I pack it in the original box and have a very small carry on. It will fit in an overhead bin.
Anyone have any issues flying with a theremin? If so, any tips for dealing with that??
Appreciate any advice & Thank you!

Any tips for air travel with a Theremini?
I've heard of folks understandably sweating at the "show us your papers" checkpoints. Reportedly border guards once tried to confiscate the pitch arm of an Etherwave Pro, but were ultimately persuaded to let it go through. No D-Levs that I'm aware of have been impounded, Rob Schwimmer travels internationally with his quite a bit.
I flew from Edinburgh to Dortmund via London and at EVERY check point, my Etherwave was poked, prodded and examined even though it was in an official MOOG case etc etc etc.
Last year I flew Return to Copenhagen with my d-Lev in my back pack: suantered through all check points without a second thought.
I have also heard of a to-do over the pitch antenna being labelled as a potential weapon but then again so is a rolled up newspaper.
To be honest, I suspect there is no standard policy anywhere for these instruments and the settled emotional status of the security officials along with current weather conditions, time of day, number of weeks past the Summer equinox and inversely proportional to time to departure will govern whether or not any check are made.

Thanks for the reply, Dewster!
Yeah - I sweat about any instrument I bring anywhere. I had to pull out the 'I cannot be parted from my extremely valuable guitar/lute/whatever [that is small enough to fit in the overhead compartment] because it is my livlihood!" card a few times. Once, when traveling with a cellist, they hassled us even though we had BOUGHT A TICKET AND RESERVED A SEAT FOR IT!!
Maybe they won't notice the pitch arm on the Theremini, since it can be tucked underneath the base? Hopefully they won't take it out of the slot and decide it could be a weapon....

Hello Roy!
I thought the original packaging might help, but I guess not... I'm just going from California to Baltimore, so hopefully nobody will pay attention to me, and/or security employees will be too tired to bother opening the box and taking it apart.
What kind of backpack did you travel with? maybe there's something about it that made them decide you were cool and didn't need to be checked??
I flew with a Subscope between Pittsburgh and Seattle. It has the aluminum case that actually looks like some kind of incendiary device. I placed it in a separate tray with my cell phone and they didn't even blink an eye at it. I packed the antenna in my checked baggage since it looks too much like a weapon of impalement.
