Online Media Posting Security 101

Ignore or read at your own risk, it's nonsense on my part, and a waste of time for which I apologize.








It pains me to think that we have to go to such lengths to protect ourselves these days, and one would think that a former plice department employee, like yours truely, would know better than to give info that could target your location, or cause professional level damage to your reputation when posting videos, ect., but yours truely has made just those kinds of mistakes, but has quickly corrected them.

I'v had to remove functionality for comments, video responses, and any location info from all current, and future videos, as well as stripping out public displays of comments, and bulletins from my youtube channel, as well as stripping out any location info such as schools attended, societies I'm a member of, employment names, ect.

And it has nothing in any way to do with the current evints on Levnet. Those folks can still reach my through normal means, and through the e-mail button on my channel if they wish.

BUT!,,,and here's why you don't make my security mistakes: I just recieved a flattering comment on one of my youtube videos, I don't mind flattery, but when I clicked on the channel link to the posting party, it turned out to be someone of questionable integrity, and taste. So, I quickly removed the comment to prevent my young relatives from seeing the channel link, and secured all videos, and my channel from future risks of public, professional, and personal harm, allthough the damage may well have allready been done.

Oh, you can still rate my videos.

He had nothin' he did, and all the videos he was watching were of a near sexually explicit nature on his channel. I did not want my younger relatives, or a potential gig prospect to click on that guy's channel link which was included in his comment post.

I wouldn’t; worry about it reflecting on you in a negative way. One thing to keep in mind was that anybody who has surfed the net for any length of time knows how these people work would quickly figure out that he was just spamming you.

As far a location info, you do need to be very careful with that.

I once had a cyber stalker harassing me and my wife. She kept it up until I PM’d her and let her know that I had her name (married and maiden), home address, and Social security Number, all gathered from publicly available information with help from the breadcrumbs she posted online.

She never posted her last name but one of her ID's contained her initals and and she posted some hobby info that allowed me to track her down.

When she realized that I have more info on her than she does on me she let it drop and I haven’t heard from her since.

I guess I am lucky that my job and previous work experience gives me access to some pretty good investigative resources and she is lucky that I am not some kind of psycho.

Lesson learned: Do not post anything.

Second lesson learned: Even if you don't post anything personal at all they may still be able to find you. Gordon was able to track me down courtesy of a friend who posted about me and my band on his blog.

I guess I am lucky Gordon is not some kind of psycho...

If they want to badly enough they can find you. Most naughty people will likely not have the smarts, or the will power to go to such troubles.

Frankly, I'm not bothered by these things, but when one is looking to hang a shingle out to attract gig prospects, or to elicit critisism from like-minded people in the same field, it does pay to limit the public's ability to directly post something that can come back to bite you if you don't catch it in time. I did find out that I can still set my videos to accept comments, but the comments have to go through me first for approval. That way there's no ebarassing suprises sneaking up on you.

I may use that option instead of just totally locking down my videos.

That sounds like a more proportionate response. :-) Most naughtiness is opportunistic.

Z-man - not terribly interested in finding out - see above comment re: not being a psychopath. Besides, I've freaked out one young person from your part of the world already, and that's enough. Still, just one question - were you born on a Thursday?

Its not really that hard to dig stuff about people on the web.
By just typeing in gordons name i know his wife is called maya and has a daugter who is 6.... and a son called alex.
