opposite pitch response questions

I've just built a MIDI theremin - the Jaycar kit, and am now costructing a custom box for better playability and aesthetics (I'll post some images soon), however;

I was under the impression that movement toward the antennae increased the pitch while moving away decreased it, yet on the Jaycar MIDI Theremin the response is the other way round. This is also the case in the construction article where it states that "moving the had inward decreases the pitch". As this is the first theremin I've built, I have a question or two:

Am I wrong in my initial assumption? Are there in fact theremin that work either way round? Any pointers much appreciated.

Incidently, the MIDI theremin works a charm as a gestural controller and with practise I hope to gain better pitch control to enable me to play something more musical than glissandos, but as I intend to build a 'real' theremin, it might be odd to switch between hand movement/pitch response configurations.

I'd be very grateful for any information on this.

I'm not sure how the Jaycar Midi Theremin is configured. However, the pitch should increase as you move your hand towards the pitch antenna. It would be interesting to find out if the theory of operation on the MIDI version is similar to the non-midi Jaycar....

On the non-midi version, you would need to adjust coil T2 to get the proper pitch response.

It does seem odd it should be configured opposite, perhaps I should ask about this directly to the Jaycar designer.

As with the non-MIDI version pitch control tuning is adjustment of the coils, the voltage output is then converted to MIDI. As an aside, I studied Max's mods article and it seems Jaycar have implemented some of these in the circuit design!

Anyway, I've just started bending a loop antennae after reading Abdulkn's great article on Silicon Chip/Jaycar metamorphosis.
