[UK] Hands Off 2007 - Publicity

This topic follows on from the topic "UK Thereminisation! (Brits - do you fancy a get-together?)"

I have established positive contact with Diana Mavroleon, host of the Songbird event, arranger of musical events in the London alternative music scene, and maker of programmes for Resonance 104.4fm (www.resonancefm.com).

I will be meeting with Diana and Ninki V on Friday to discuss possibilities.

In light of this I have quickly knocked up an A4 poster for Hands Off 2007 to give to her. I would appreciate suggestions as to how it could be improved or offers of assistance from anyone skilled in graphic design.

First thought - bland. Second thought - what is it?v I know we haven't got any definite items yet, but I think some sort of small two line description and perhaps a 'Featuring:' panel would make it a bit better.

The logo is good, but colour is essential.

Fair point. I was going for elegant, but it could be bland.

Monochrome for ease of printing, but I'll have a go this evening at adding some colour. I'm thinking pillar box red for the figure, and electric blue for the theremin/lecturn to tie in with the UK aspect.

Short description - any suggestions for the wording? Perhaps something like:

  "Two days of performances, talks and workshops
  for theremin players and aficionados."

?

 

Bland or elegant? My initial reaction was 'eye-catching and simple'. It may be a little bland due to lack of colour, but I don't think it would need much done.

I think the figure is clear, effective and slightly ambiguous (in a good way) - neither obviously male or female, nor playing any known make of theremin, whilst still obviously a theremin.

The advantage of this is that the figure will scale well - from poster to flyer - all the detail will be retained.

When choosing colours, it is important to make them greyscale-compatible - if we email a copy of a poster or leaflet for use and the recipient doesn't have a colour printer, then we don't want a black blob where a clear image should be. This might mean using a darker blue and lighter red than would otherwise have been the case.

I also like the way the figure might be pointing to the title.

I would make the 'Hands Off 2007' in a larger/bolder font, perhaps with an effect like drop shadow or blur to make it clearly the title.

I'd also replace the second 'Hands Off 2007' with the description, and the fact that this will be in London.

Nice work, Gordon. It seems only right that we should give it pride of place at theremin.org.uk, so I've added another info section which we can update as things get decided / confirmed.

OK.

I made one final tweak after printing a test copy - the drop shadow looked dreadful. Replaced with a simple outline for the theremin, and an inner bevel for the title.
